2 String Quilt Table Runners

I had started out making some blue string blocks and some red string blocks to make a red and blue scrappy string baby or lap quilt, depending on how many blocks I ended up with. Then I changed my mind and just wanted to do something with what I had already made and decided on making 2 table runners instead and be done with them. I do have a few red and blue blocks leftover, so they might become purse flaps for the purses I donate or some kind of appliqué? I'll see when I get to them later.

Glad I finished these. The blue one was done first and is for sale at the gift shop. If it sells, I will take the red one in or add it to my PayHip Shop soon.

There is something so satisfying about making string blocks and turning them into quilts of any size.

A simple serpentine stitch works great for quilting these runners.

Now that I am looking at this, I should have swapped one of those blocks with the checks on the right with one of the blocks with the red and tiny white dots on the left to balance it out more. Oh well, sometimes I just want to finish something so I can move on and I guess this was one of those times.🙄

I used the serpentine stitch to quilt this red runner too.

I like the red musical fabric for the backing. I forgot to take a photo of the backing for the blue. I used a tiny plaid print of blue with a touch of red for the blue runner backing.

Southwest Stars Table Runner

I made this table runner over a month ago and recently quilted and added the binding on it. I took it to the gift shop where I sell things and it should sell there eventually as Southwest items do very well there.
I really liked making this star block (Spinning Star?) and it's fun to see how it looks in different colors. I made some of these stars for the SAHRR quilt (2025) where I added 2 rows on my quilt. The completed quilted SAHRR will be shared soon, as will all the others who have finished their SAHRR quilts, so be looking for it.

Southwest fabric prints in batik, plus the orange rust and cream color fabrics are batik and the binding is batik fabric too.

I like how there is a secondary star in the rust orange color that appears as you sew together the blocks. Plus, the brown frames both the turquoise stars as well as the rust orange stars.

A simple serpentine stitch was used for the quilting.

The backing is a Southwest print of Indian arrows. This is not batik fabric though.

Kokopelli Scrappy Table Runner

A friend gave me a panel which consisted of all small Kokopelli squares in a  different colors. I cut out 10 Kokopelli's (2 of each color) and then sewed batik scraps around each square. I turned it into a table runner with the Kokopelli's facing into the center, so that when used as a table runner wherever you might be sitting, you will see the Kokopelli right side up.  The backing and binding is also a Kokopelli print.

Measures 12" x 30".

This is the backing and also the fabric I used for the binding.

There are a lot of Kokopelli squares in the panel, so I made a second table runner (just need to quilt and bind it) and also a purse flap for the Sew Powerful purses that I make to donate. I will write a bit of an explanation about Kokopelli to include with the notecard so that the girl receiving the purse will know who Kokopelli is.

Blue String Quilt Table Runner

Are you Feeling Blue? Well how about you grab some of your blue colored fabric scraps and make this string table runner to lift your spirits? It's Feeling Blue week over on the Therm-O-Web blog and if you pop over there you can get my full tutorial on how to make a Blue String Quilt Table Runner of your very own.

Made from a variety of blue fabric scraps with a pop of pink.

The table runner finishes at 16 1/4" wide x 39 3/4" long, but you can easily adjust the finished size blocks that you make or the number of blocks you make to change the size of the runner to fit your table.

Adding these fusible flower appliqué shapes are optional, but I did include the templates in the instructions.

These are the Therm-O-Web products that I used in making the Blue String Quilt Table Runner:

Dresden Sunflower Table Runner ( & the Fairy Tales Blog Hop)

I signed up for the Fairy Tales Blog Hop awhile ago, which is hosted by Joan of Moosestash Quilting. Well I had an idea or two, but those just didn't pan out, so I switched gears and this is what I came up with.

I know you are wondering how does this fit the fairy tale blog theme? Well Joan said it can be YOUR fairy tale, so my fairy tale would include using up all my scraps, down to the itty bittiest scrap, so I created this table runner with all scraps (or nearly all scraps). I certainly didn't use up all of my scraps making this runner, but that is my Fairy Tale to be able to use up all of my scraps some day. Well, you know those dang scraps multiply like rabbits, so it is wishful thinking, but I will still be trying to use up those dang scraps.

As a Crafter's Edge Design Team member, I also used several die cuts to create this runner, which are listed farther down below.

First, just like in Rumpelstiltskin, a maiden spun her hair into gold while I sewed my scraps of white and tans into a background for my table runner.

Scraps of all sizes were sewn together free-form or crumb style to create the background to my table runner first.

Table Runner Dresden Plate sunflowers in pots on Scrappy background with scattered applique hearts
Here is the finished runner. I don't even have a table to photograph it on because my table is round. :0P

I made 2 Dresden Plates from the Dresden die cut as sunflowers, added a stem from the 1" strip die. I used the Tumbler die for the pot and a 1.5" strip as the rim of the pot. I used the leaf from the Large Flower die set and some Whimsical Hearts from that die set and a small heart from the Nested Hearts too. So that is 6 different die sets that I used all or part of the die cuts from to create this table runner. And all of the batik fabrics that I used came out of my scrap bag! The backing fabric I cut from yardage, but everything else was from my fairy tale scraps, lol!

The following 6 Crafter's Edge Die Cuts were used in the making of this Dresden Sunflower Table Runner:
1" & 1.5-inch Strip Cutters: 1" strips were used for the stems and folded into the center. 1.5" strips were used for the rim of the pots.

The leaf from this Large Flower die was used for the leaves of the sunflowers.

The Sunflowers were made using the largest of the Rounded Dresden
 plate die set.
I used the Tumbler die cut for the pots.

I used some Whimsical Hearts.

I used the smallest heart from the Nested Hearts.

So there you have it, but wait there's more to see on these other blogs. 5 days of Fairy Tale blog hopping, so hop to it and see what Fairy Tales these other bloggers have to share with you.

3 Bears Applique Quilted Table Runner

I  made this table runner a while back. I just wanted to do something fun and simple. So I appliqued a few bears (I think I did 5, but settled on 3 for the runner). Then played with setting ideas and came up with this, which is similar to the setting I did for the cat table runner I made months ago.

I used up some scraps making this too, which is always a bonus.

I added buttons for the eyes.

Each bear has different button eyes and set differently too to give them each their own personalty,

A nice plaid fabric for the backing of the runner.
This runner is for sale in my Etsy shop.

Primitive Funky Cats Table Runner

I had started making some cat applique blocks (Alley Cat Tales Primitives Never Enough Cats pattern) with the idea I would make it into a table runner. I had stitched around most of the applique parts, when I got an email from a blog friend & customer of mine who wanted a Spring table runner. She was thinking of stars. I mentioned to her I was in the process of making a cat runner (she is a lover of cats) and I would send her some photos in progress. Well that was it, she said forget the stars she wanted the cats! LOL!!!

I then asked her about the other colors and made some fabric suggestions to the triangle color and the 4-patch colors. I made one 4-patch and selected some fabrics I thought would look good. One was a pink print, but she didn't want the pink. Anyhow, she did like the stripe fabric and the 4-patch and so I took it from there and put it together and quilted it. I knew if this runner made me smile, she would be beaming with delight when she got it. I did enjoy making this, especially the cats. I might just have to make another one some day, but in different colors. It always feels good when something I make goes to a good home.

To give the cats a bit of individual purrsonality, I placed their eyes each a bit differently and gave them each a different mouth too. I also wanted to place the cats each heading in a different direction to add more to the wonky, funky feeling as well.

Primitive Funky Cats Table Runner.

Since the cat blocks were not square, I had to add a strip on one side to make them square so the setting would fit correctly. I like how it looks, so it turned out to be a happy accident.

I saw a setting similar to this online on a different table runner and liked it, so I decided to give it a try.

Straight quilting in the triangle areas and free motion quilting on the rest.

Each cat's eyes are a bit different in placement. This one is horizontal.

This cat has diagonal eyes, angling in.

This one has vertical eyes. I didn't quilt on the cats, just around them. I wanted the cats to puff out a bit.

This cat has diagonal eyes angling out like a Siamese. As careful as I am when I photograph black or dark fabric, those dang littl lint monsters come out and just throw themselves onto my dark fabric!!! I can never see them in my camera or my naked eye because they are so sneaky and fast! But there they are once I load my photos. One day I will defeat you little lint monsters!

I took this photo to show how it might look with the pink fabric for the triangles. The pink fabric picked up the pink in the cat noses and the pink in the floral print of the 4-patches too. But it would have been a lot of pink, so I think the blue-green stripe that was chosen was the right choice.
I borrowed my daughter's oval table to photograph the runner on a real table.

Fits just right on my daughter's oval table. Now I can see how it looks on a table.
