Half Round Quilted Sunflower Table Topper

Gosh, I made this back in May and haven't posted it yet. Better late than never.

Our neighborhood had a community garage sale for those wanting to partake in May. I always love to walk the neighborhood numerous times to not only look at what is offered for sale, but I get my exercise then too. I didn't really see anything I wanted, but then at one house I saw a black half round table that did catch my eye. I knew I didn't want a black table, so I bought it and had hubby paint it white for me. Later when I got it home, I noticed it was from Ikea. We don't have Ikea here. The closest Ikea stores are in a Denver suburb or in Phoenix. Too far to drive.

I wanted the table for our entry. It had to be the right size and I wanted a half round table so it wouldn't stick out too much. It fit perfectly! Next was to get on to making a table topper for it. I love sunflowers & Echinacea Coneflowers are my 2 favorite flowers, but the sunflower lent itself best for this topper.

I started sewing teal/turquoise/aqua scraps to create the background for the topper and then made an appliqué sunflower to go on top. I LOVE how it came out ad the colors are so eye popping gorgeous. Now there is fun pop of color as you enter the house.

The flowers aren't down on the shelf now as my daughter gave them to me for Mother's Day in May and I just put them there to take the photo. The top is a catch all for keys and sunglasses as we come and go.

Paisley Splash Elephant Quilt

Hello scrappy quilt lovers and appliqué lovers. I made this quilt using scraps, scraps and more scraps. I started off piecing yellow fabric scraps for the background of the quilt. It sure feels good to use up even the tiniest of fabric scraps, however the reduction of scraps used is small as I end up with even more scraps after cutting the backing and the binding. Ugh! Such is the nature of sewing with scraps I suppose. But still, I do love to use scraps, especially as background as it not only looks great and adds more interest than using a plain piece of fabric, but it does feel more creative and more artsy looking too.

After I made the background, I found this free pattern, Paisley Splash, from Windham Fabrics (designed by Myiesha & Katie) that featured an appliqué elephant with his trunk held high and paisley shaped water (and circles) falling down. A purple elephant seemed to look the best on the yellow background, since yellow and purple are complimentary colors. I added touches of pink and blue for the paisley and circles, using whatever scraps I had on hand.

I am donating this quilt to Project Linus. I belong to a PL group that meets twice a month and I prefer to do my own thing with my own fabrics. They do have kits available to sew at the group for simple quilts like strips to make rag quilts or squares to sew together. I would be bored to tears if I couldn't create what I wanted to make and choose my own colors/fabric. But it is great that others in the groups do sew those kits when we meet. It is especially great they have quilts for beginners who join us as they are easy to sew. I tried one the first time I went and completed one flannel rag quilt during that time.

But a few of us just need to do our own thing and so it's nice I am not the only one who wants sew what I like. Then the Show & Tell is more inspiring and just might encourage others to try something of their own one day too.  We also meet across town with all the PL groups in the Albuquerque area for just Show & Tell once a month. I will be attending my first meeting for that in a week. I have this quilt and the green triangle quilt (also made with scraps) that I appliquéd a bear in flannel on the quilt to show at the meeting. I hear it's very inspiring to see all the great Show & Tell and I am looking forward to attending that meeting.

This quilt measures 33" x 30.5". I just made the background the size I wanted it to in order to fit within the PL guideline sizes. The actual pattern for this quilt measures 22.5" x 33.5". I needed this quilt to be a bit larger. Since it's appliqué, you can make the background any size you want to.

Closer look at the crumb piecing and quilting.

I have lots of PL ideas and using up all the scraps that never seem to end. A lot of those scraps come from me making the Sew Powerful Purses that I donate also, so I need some place to use up scraps! Happy piecing, appliqué & quilting my friends!

Valentine Heart Dream Catcher

It's Love is in the Air week over on the Therm-O-Web blog.  I am thrilled to be on the Therm-O-Web Design Team and this is my first Therm-O-Web project that I made to share with you. I created this Valentine Day Dream Catcher using a small embroidery hoop and a bit of fabric, ribbon yarn and crystals. You can check out the full tutorial on the Therm-O-Web blog.

The heart is a reverse appliqué technique and the scrappy piecing is a great way to use up small bits of fabric. Choose the size embroidery hoop you want to use to make this Dream Catcher. While not a traditional Dream Catcher, this embroidery hoop art has the feeling of a Dream Catcher.

I added hotfix crystals, buttons, a bit of hand embroidery in straight stitches and French Knots.

Looks great blowing in the breeze on a tree.

Please check out my tutorial on the Therm-O-Web blog.

Dresden Sunflower Table Runner ( & the Fairy Tales Blog Hop)

I signed up for the Fairy Tales Blog Hop awhile ago, which is hosted by Joan of Moosestash Quilting. Well I had an idea or two, but those just didn't pan out, so I switched gears and this is what I came up with.

I know you are wondering how does this fit the fairy tale blog theme? Well Joan said it can be YOUR fairy tale, so my fairy tale would include using up all my scraps, down to the itty bittiest scrap, so I created this table runner with all scraps (or nearly all scraps). I certainly didn't use up all of my scraps making this runner, but that is my Fairy Tale to be able to use up all of my scraps some day. Well, you know those dang scraps multiply like rabbits, so it is wishful thinking, but I will still be trying to use up those dang scraps.

As a Crafter's Edge Design Team member, I also used several die cuts to create this runner, which are listed farther down below.

First, just like in Rumpelstiltskin, a maiden spun her hair into gold while I sewed my scraps of white and tans into a background for my table runner.

Scraps of all sizes were sewn together free-form or crumb style to create the background to my table runner first.

Table Runner Dresden Plate sunflowers in pots on Scrappy background with scattered applique hearts
Here is the finished runner. I don't even have a table to photograph it on because my table is round. :0P

I made 2 Dresden Plates from the Dresden die cut as sunflowers, added a stem from the 1" strip die. I used the Tumbler die for the pot and a 1.5" strip as the rim of the pot. I used the leaf from the Large Flower die set and some Whimsical Hearts from that die set and a small heart from the Nested Hearts too. So that is 6 different die sets that I used all or part of the die cuts from to create this table runner. And all of the batik fabrics that I used came out of my scrap bag! The backing fabric I cut from yardage, but everything else was from my fairy tale scraps, lol!

The following 6 Crafter's Edge Die Cuts were used in the making of this Dresden Sunflower Table Runner:
1" & 1.5-inch Strip Cutters: 1" strips were used for the stems and folded into the center. 1.5" strips were used for the rim of the pots.

The leaf from this Large Flower die was used for the leaves of the sunflowers.

The Sunflowers were made using the largest of the Rounded Dresden
 plate die set.
I used the Tumbler die cut for the pots.

I used some Whimsical Hearts.

I used the smallest heart from the Nested Hearts.

So there you have it, but wait there's more to see on these other blogs. 5 days of Fairy Tale blog hopping, so hop to it and see what Fairy Tales these other bloggers have to share with you.

Round Scrappy Green Table Topper with Applique Butterflies

I grabbed my green fabric scraps and started piecing free form style (also called crumb quilting or crumb piecing) because I find it fun and relaxing to just sew without a pattern to follow or a real plan in mind. As I pieced these scraps of fabric together I started thinking about what I should do with the scrappy pieces I was making. As my pieces got larger, I thought maybe I would make a few bags, but then an idea popped into my head to make a round table topper. I had already cut and fused some butterfly applique pieces a month ago, thinking I would use them to make some sort of a quilt, so after the top was made, I placed the butterflies on top and fused them into place. I blanket stitched around the butterflies, then hand stitched the antennae, quilted the topper and then sewed on bias binding all around.

I am pleased with the results and I used up a lot of those green scraps that had been accumulating, as well as some batik fabric for the butterflies. I could make one of these in every color scrap I have on hand and still have a ton of scraps left! Using scraps makes my heart sing and I love a free form no rules project too.

This measures about 35".

The funny thing when I was piecing these green scraps together, a blog I follow (Quilt Fabrication) had just posted a video tutorial showing how to sew Crumbs. Susan was sewing in red fabrics. I commented that I was also sewing crumbs. Susan has a Linky Party called Midweek Makers and I will be linking this on Wednesday to her Linky Party.

I had written a tutorial myself on how to sew a Scrappy Background or Scrappy Quilt, a few years ago. It's a free tutorial that is on Makerist (click the button on sidebar).
