Egyptian Quilt Exhibit at AQS Show in Albuquerque

There was a special exhibit at the AQS show, called Stitch Like an Egyptian. There is even a book with the same title (click on link) if you want to purchase it. These are all stitched by hand. There was a man sitting and doing applique on a quilt top. I asked him how long it takes to make one of the quilts. He asked which one? I said any of them and he pointed to the one hanging behind him and said that one took 3 months to make. These were all wall quilts, so no huge bed quilts here. They were all for sale too, with AQS members getting a better price. So many had the look of a Mandala or Kaleidoscope.

  1. 3 months! That must be all he does for the entire 3 months, If I could make one of those in a lifetime I'd be happy.

  2. Wow, What an amazing inspiration! I don't know what is the most impressive - the colors, the composition, or the execution. Thanks so much for sharing these last few days. If there are any more coming, I'm sure they will be just as amazing.

  4. I thought these quilts were amazing but something did surprise me about some of them. I would look at a very intricate piece and then notice some really big stitches of embroidery with thick looking yarn. it didn't match up to me and looked clumsy. The overall effect of the wall hangings are beautiful and the design and color were very appealing.

  7. I am speechless seeing these hand appliqued/stitched quilts. Such a brave and clever man to be sitting there sewing and demonstrating his craft. Truly amazing quilt show you were fortunate enough to see in person.
