What to do With Fabric Scraps

I am a scrapaholic and save every single piece of fabric. The larger fabric scraps I use in something creative like a quilt or bag, but the tiniest scraps end up here in this bucket.
Here is my bucket of scraps. I throw all the tiniest scraps of fabrics into this bucket. You know all those trimmings from whatever I am sewing. Plus all the thread snips and then there are the batting scraps and tidbits of yarn. What do I do with these you might ask?

I make pet beds out of whatever fabric I might have that is sturdy enough for the exterior fabric. This one is a polar fleece fabric. I have used upholstery-type fabric and old blue jeans that I cut the legs off to make a pillow and sew it into a bed. I donate the beds to a no-kill cat shelter. I stuff the beds with all those fabric/thread/batting scraps that I toss into the bucket. The beds can be easily washed and the stuffing doesn't all lump together into a blob like polyester stuffing does if you have ever tried to wash a pillow stuffed with poly stuffing.
If you want to make a pet bed and stuff with your fabric scraps, just follow my tip for making a pillow HERE and stuff with scraps, sew the opening closed and that's it. Simple, huh? Plus you will be recycling, upcycling and re-purposing all at the same time! Pin It Now!

  1. I love this idea. I think I'll go dig out the scraps I have in the trash mixed with papers and save for this purpose.

  3. What a clever idea! I save scraps but not the bits - I guess there really is a use for everything.

  4. Love the idea of using the scraps of fabrics to make a pet bed. Very clever! And you can do so with all kinds of fabric too, from cotton to upholstery grade.

  6. I never thought to do this for exactly the reason you state will not happen, lumping together!

So, from now on I will save everything! Thanks, Lynda

  10. What a fantastic idea! I save all my corner snips in decorative jars, but the rest are thrown into the trash bin - I'll think twice about doing this now!
    Cheers!

  11. I've been saving all the tiny pieces too for pet beds, even raiding the garbage at retreats. I've made pet beds for my family members pets. I recently had to transfer the bits into a larger garbage sized bag so I guess it's time to make more pet beds for the humane society. Great idea, and easily washable!

  13. I'm a knitter, so I have a bucket in which I save all my yarn ends and then I have stuffing when I need it. I don't do much sewing, but from now on I'm going to do the same with my fabric scraps :) Thanks for the idea!

  14. I, too, make pet beds for the local animal shelter. I think it is a great idea. I also crochet and used the snippets I cut off the afghans. When my mother was alive she made baby blankets and we gave them to the local police department and then discovered our VFW Post. Not the afghans and quilts I make a wheelchair size or for the Wounded Warriors babies.

I use flannel scraps to make baby washcloths. they are much studier, softer and don't shrink up.

  18. I am currently cutting down fabric scraps so they can be folded nicely or just cut into usable squares. But, I am filling up a huge plastic bag that a store bought comforter comes in. I love your idea and will be making a pet bed soon. Thanks for sharing.
