Handknit Socks in Green & Turquoise

I love the book entitled, Getting Started Knitting Socks by Ann Budd. Ann has instructions for knitting socks in all gauges, so you just choose the instructions for the gauge of sock that your yarn/needles knit to. The instructions are basic, but she also has instructions for certain patterns, so it's not all knitting stockinette stitch. What I like to do is use the instructions for the gauge and needle I knit (in this case I used a size 1 needle at 8 stitches= 1" gauge) and then knit the body of the sock (around the leg and the top) in a different stitch. For these socks I chose to knit them in a Knit 3, Purl 1. I have knit other socks in a K2, P2, or knit a cable, etc. You can choose whatever you like as long as the pattern can be knit around the leg evenly (as you change to the foot, you might be a stitch short of the pattern as it is knit into the stockinette, but that doesn't matter as the pattern will still be there.

I love Opal Sock yarn too. After knitting socks for years, this is the best sock yarn I have found and doesn't get holes as easily as other yarns have. I also knit with an added strand of nylon thread (like Wooly Nylon) after knitting the leg, starting at the heel and the rest of the sock. This adds extra nylon for strength and prevents holes from happening as quickly (it all depends on your yarn and how hard you are on socks as to how long before you get holes, typically in the heel or toe area). Hubby is hard on socks and the socks I knit him in Opal sock yarn and nylon don't have holes yet and it's been a long time now since I knit the first pair in Opal yarn.

I love the colors of greens in these socks. I have been wearing them now for a few days and love the feel. There is nothing like wearing handknit socks.

The self striping yarn came out almost identically on these 2 socks. Oftentimes the heel and toe are in a different color area of the yarn.

I have small feet (size 6 shoe), so I always have lots of leftover sock yarn. This is a large skein, so I only needed one skein of yarn to knit this pair of socks.

I think I am going to gather all the bits of leftover sock yarn I have from the dozens of socks I have knit in the past and knit a scarf. It will certainly be a wild looking scarf with lots of colors, that's for sure.
Happy knitting!

I am not an affiliate for Ann Budd or Opal yarn, I just love their products.

Self-Striping Hand Knit Socks

These socks were knit last year, but I hadn't posted them on my blog. I love the self striping and colors of this yarn. The yarn is thicker than other sock yarn I have used before. I used a sock yarn from Regia, which is German made. They are warmer, thicker and hardly pill, unlike most other brands of sock yarn I have used before, which pill horribly.

I have a variety of brands, and colors of sock yarn to knit socks or scarves, etc. with, so I need to use up those yarns before I buy any more Regia sock yarn again.

Colorful Knit Socks

I knit these socks for myself out of this colorful yarn I had (yarn label missing). I really like this yarn and I don't know what brand it is. It has a really nice twist to the plys. This yarn doesn't pill much which I really like because all the other sock yarn I have used pills a lot! So I wish I knew what yarn this was.

Blue Knit Socks

I knit another pair of socks for my husband. These I knit in blue (Lion Brand Sock Yarn). I recently darned the last 2 pair of socks I had knit him a couple of years ago. The socks seem to last about 2 years with some darning added a couple of times. He tends to be hard on socks and shoes. So I try to keep up and knit a pair every year or 2 for him. When I start knitting the heel and foot I add some nylon and hold it together along with the yarn while I am knitting. The nylon gives more strength and even though he gets holes in the heel and toe, it takes a bit longer for the holes to happen by adding the nylon. Maybe I need to add a triple strand of nylon?

You can see here where I added the nylon (light gray) along with the blue yarn in the lower part of the sock. The upper is the leg and that part never gets the wear that the heel and toe does.

Hand Knit Socks in a Self-Striping Yarn

I knit these socks from some self-striping yarn. Loops and Thread brand yarn (from Michael's). The yarn is a blend of merino wool, nylon and even 10% cashmere, making them very soft. I love the colors and like how the pattern of the yarn knit out. I was able to knit one entire sock and about 2/3's of the second sock from one ball of yarn. So if I knit a really short short leg, I might be able to knit another pair of socks from what is leftover of this yarn, or I could just knit the toes and heels in another contrasting yarn color. But in the meantime I need to finish a baby blanket I am knitting. Nearly done with it.

I knit these socks with a self-stripe yarn. I knit a lace rib knit on the leg and the top of the sock.  The yarn was from Knit Picks.

Hand Knit Socks

I knit these socks with Knit Picks Essential sock yarn. It self patterns as you knit.

The tiniest sock ever! This one was rather tricky to knit around the toe, just because it was so small.  It was knit with 000 size needles.  I was going to make 2 socks and make them into earrings, but for now I only made this one.

Chunky Knit Socks

My friend Susan gave me a skein of Rowan's ColourScape chunky yarn by Kaffe Fassett. I started knitting a scarf and then seeing how much yarn I had, ripped the scarf apart and began making socks instead. I still had quite a bit of yarn leftover. I was pleasantly surprised how far one skein of this yarn went. These will certainly keep my cold feet warm on these cold nights!

Knit Beret and Socks

Top of beret.
I made these for my grandson. I made the socks first out of a self-stripe/patterning yarn. Then I made the hat, but ran out of the yarn and so I used a white yarn to finish the hat, but the white was so stark I soaked the whole thing in some tea after it was finished to blend the colors. I put it on my grandson and the white part sits on the top of the head, so it works fine, and my grandson looks so adorable in this hat!
Underside of beret you can see the ribbing.

Knit Socks

Wool yarn from Knit Picks. I knit a cable pattern on these socks. Word of warning: use yarn that has at least 25% nylon and 75% wool or other fiber because the nylon gives socks the durability they need in the heels and toes. This yarn here was 100% wool. I wore the socks around the house for a couple of hours while wearing slippers too and the heels had already had worn a hole in them! I emailed Knit Picks customer service to tell them they should not be telling people this yarn make great socks (which is what their catalog does say) and told them what had happened to me. They refunded my yarn cost which was nice, but I really just wanted them to be aware that 100% wool does not make good socks at least for the heels and toes. Lesson learned and I will wear these only while in bed to keep warm and won't walk on them.

This sock yarn has 25% nylon and 75% wool and is a nice sock yarn. This was a Regia sock yarn is great colors that self pattern.

Closer view.
