Thanks Carol of
Just Let Me Quilt for hosting this blog hop. As we all know Carol loves Halloween!
I have wanted to make a spider web table topper for a long time and decided this was a good time to get it done for this blog hop. I used scraps in purple, yellow, orange, lime and black to create the blocks. The hardest part was trying to square up those quarter square wedges after the scraps were sewn on the muslin base. My spider web is definitely NOT perfect, but then real spider webs in general are not perfect either (see last photo in this post), but both a real spider web and this topper get the job done.

I did make my son a lap quilt in a spider web about 20 years ago and don't recall that it was as difficult as this one was to square up those triangles. Still I love the overall look of this topper. |
|
I had to add a spider, so I used a button, added some red thread on top and embroidered some legs and a head. |
|
I quilted this like a spider web too using glow-in-the-dark thread, but unfortunately I couldn't get a photo of the glowing thread spider web. If I used a flash, all you saw was the quilt and without a flash, I got a solid black photo as my camera didn't recognize anything. Boo-hoo. I can tell you it looked so cool glowing in the dark! |

The backing fabric is lots of tiny pumpkins. |

I had fun sewing and using my scraps, but I wonder if there is an easier way to achieve a better spider web without using a foundation base (too thick) and an easier way to square it up without the bias side getting all stretched out of shape? All my online searches basically showed the same method. Paper piecing is not something I enjoy, but I wonder if sewing to paper and squaring the triangles would help? But then you have to remove the paper and there goes the bias getting stretched out of shape, ugh! I do like the kite shape that I made in black, although another method I saw online is made with just triangles and looks easier to make, but not as good looking as the method I made here. Maybe this will be my last spider web quilt? |

As you can see this real spider web is not perfect, (neither is my spider web quilt), but it looks great and gets the job done for the spider.

I think your spider web is perfect the way it is. Like you said even real webs have their flaws. And if it gets the job done....
ReplyDeleteDon't be so hard on yourself. I recently made a quilt for the second time and I don't remember having so much trouble with the first one. Also, I am pretty sure that real spider webs are not perfect either, but maybe they are. Glow in the dark thread was cool.
ReplyDeleteI love your spider web table topper, Daryl. All the colors and the arrangement of the blocks are great. Maybe it's not necessary to get the triangles to exactly match up (but I know we all like that to happen and usually obsess over it)... Thanks for sharing. It is beautiful!
ReplyDeletelove this blog hop thanks for telling me about it. your spider web is fun and not scary which I appreciate. I just love how you improvised a spider from a button and embroidery. great choice of fabric. I wish I could see how the glow in the dark thread looks it would be fun to use on a Halloween costume. great job as always.
