My 2016 Goals

With the New Year of 2016 approaching fast, I thought I would share a few of my goals (resolutions) here. As some people will tell you that if you write your goals or resolutions down it will make you more accountable. So here goes:

  • Spend more time creating and less time on the computer! (Which means less blogging, less Facebook, less Pinterest and less mindless surfing!!!)
  • Lose the weight I slowly gained over the past 10 years so that I can fit back into my favorite blue jeans again! *sigh*
  • Exercise more.
  • Make things I really want to make for myself, and family and friends.
  • Get rid of stuff I no longer need, want or use by selling it, donating it, trading it, or just giving it away to someone.
  • Stop buying and collecting more stuff I do not need!
  • Do what makes me happy.
My husband will be the happiest man on Earth if I can accomplish those 7 goals, LOL!!!

I will still blog, even if it's less often than before. I hope I will be sharing much more creative stuff with you in the new year. So many other bloggers have turned to sharing on Facebook rather than to continue to blog. Blogging does take some time to do, but I enjoy blogging and reading other blogs too. Even though Facebook is supposed to be about connecting with friends and family, I find it more impersonal than a blog. Facebook is mostly sharing photos, or short videos or other stuff you find on the internet to share. I haven't gotten to know anyone any better from being on Facebook. So many people on Facebook I do not even know at all. I joined some groups like a few bag making groups and it's nice to see what those women have created, but I really only know a few of those women. I enjoy some things on Facebook, but it is the biggest time waster of all the stuff on the internet (in my opinion). I know some of you love Facebook, but I resisted joining it and finally gave in several months ago because of the bag groups I belong to. The idea how Facebook got started (connecting college students with other college students) was a good idea, but it is no longer just about connecting with a few friends at college. Businesses, the news media, the government, etc. all have Facebook connections. It is no longer about connecting with a few college friends or even beyond college friends. It's the whole world connecting. Some are closed private groups and there are so many of those groups out there that who has the time to connect with them all? 90% of the stuff posted on Facebook is from someone I do not even know. Instagram makes more sense if all you want is to look at or post photos, but since I do not have a cell phone, I found out that I cannot post photos on Instagram myself, which is probably a good thing for me as it means one less thing on the computer to waste my time with.

What about you my lovely readers and followers? Do you prefer to read a blog or Facebook or Instagram, etc? Is blogging fast becoming a dinosaur in today's world? I would be curious to know what others think about all the stuff that captures our attention on the internet these days.

  1. I prefer to read blogs and I appreciate the time that it takes to write one. I don't do Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, U-Tube, Periscope, or any thing other than read blogs. Thanks!

  2. I don't have a Facebook page. I never liked it. I think people waste a lot of time because of it. I do blog and enjoy reading blogs of people with similar interest, making bags. BTW love those two last pictures. So true. I was thinking of you when I saw the weather mess is going on. Have a wonderful New Year 2016! And may you accomplish your goals and much more.
    Hugs!!

  3. Heh, then I prefer dinosaurs (and I write one, too). I can't always count on catching stuff on Facebook - they're known not to show people all of your posts. So blog feeds are much more reliable. Besides, I like reading blogs and looking at the creative layout. It's not the same on FB.

I'm in purge-mode as well, looking to get rid of my old fabric and sell/give away what I make from it. Good luck with your purge!

  4. I love writing my blog and the little virtual quilting guild we have found. I have a pinterest page....but I use it for school...and really only go on to it when we are working on a project at home or school. I can go weeks without looking at my page there. LOL!! That's always been it for me. I like stay a little old fashioned. Keeps my life simple and happy.

  5. Wow, your list of goals could have been written for me. I wish you all of the best with it.

I have avoided facebook and given all of the people I know who are quitting it since it is such a time suck for them, I'm glad.

I have a pinterest page and other social media accounts but prefer blogs to instagram. While I love looking at the beautiful pictures, I miss the sharing stories and community connections that come with blogs.

  6. Oh Daryl Dear you have completely done my homework for me. These goals could easily be mine! I prefer to continue to blog and find a sincere like-minded community where real friendships are formed. I FB to see what my daughter and granddaughters are up to. I Pinterest when waiting for dinner to cook or some other wasteful time. I gave up Twitter. I do not understand Instagram at all. I have put my own limits on the time I spend on the computer. I have to "earn" time by doing my chores or creative pursuits. It sounds silly but it works for me. May you have a very Happy, Healthy and Productive New Year in 2016...

  7. Your life goals pretty much match mine for the year. Hope you nail each one in 2016

I've never seen a Facebook post and intend to keep it that way. I prefer reading blogs. They just seem more personal, like reading a letter from a friend.

    1. Marianne, the older I get the harder it is to take off those excess pounds that pile on year after year. I do eat healthy already, but I need to exercise more than I do. I used to be so good at working out. Sure could use the motivation to stick with it! You are a no-reply, so I am responding here to you. Hope you come back to read this.

  11. You hit the nail right on the head. I joined Instagram one week and gave it up the next week. Post a photo just to see how many likes you can get?! Totally impersonal. And it's the same photos you see on their FB page and Flickr and Blog. I peek at Facebook to see what my kids and friends are up to. Way too many people use Facebook as an attention getter. How popular they can think they are. And most of them DO NOT have the all wonderful life they are pretending to portray on Facebook. And the ones that have their whole entire life on Facebook...SHEESH! I'm sticking with blogger too! Happy New Year Daryl!

  12. Daryl, I really love reading your Blog. I don't like facebook or any of the others. It was all about bragging and looking for attention. Its just not what I want to waste my time with. Your goals are great, I should do some of them myself. I hope you have a wonderful New Year.

  13. I love blogs. I feel like I have really made some friends through blogging. I have a Facebook page but only so I can see what members of my family and some friends are up to. The ones that I would never hear from otherwise. I still like writing letters on paper and mailing them too... Keep up the blogging - it is fun to see what you are up to.

  14. Great goals, Daryl, especially the first and last. I waste an inordinate amount of time on social media. Towards the end of last year, I cut out a lot of the time wasting - using it sensibly and not getting sucked into checking it all the time. Sadly, over the holiday break I've gone back to old habits.

Give me a blog over Facebook any day. Last year I removed myself from most of the Facebook groups I belonged to. A blog is reliable, it's always there and it doesn't rely on an algorithm for me to see it - shows up in my RSS reader every time, unlike Facebook. Looking forward to seeing what you create this year.

  15. Great minds (or not - LOL) think alike, Daryl. I've had a blog post about this very topic sitting in my reserve pile for over a year now and was going to post it next week. It's since been bumped out of the rotation and likely won't be seen for another month or so, but in it, I had/have similar thoughts and complaints. I especially bemoan the fact that some bloggers have gravitated towards their various social media platforms and have given their blogs the short end of the stick. That's really too bad. On the other hand, I've long suspected that I'm not the only one NOT to have signed up for Facebook, but it's always nice to hear that the decision is one that we are all happy about! Good luck with your goals for 2016... :-)

  17. That could be my list Daryl!!! I never had to worry about weight before but the last couple of years....as I get older....ugh! More exercise....always a good one! Enjoy!

  18. I love blogs because you can get to know the person blogging and can add to the conversation. It is a doorway rather than just a peephole into the lives and minds of the bloggers. I am not a fan of Facebook although I have an account to follow my children in their adventures but I totally object to getting people who I have not personally friended entering my space! So I rarely post anything to it. Instagram I love for the quick recording and chat on a project I might be doing. Please keep blogging!
