Flannel Pocket Bear

I have seen a lot of cute pocket dolls online, mostly knit dolls. That got me thinking about making some, but knitting small things like dolls and animals can be rather fiddly to knit and put together, even if it is knit in one piece, rather than lots of tiny pieces. So what if? What if I made a simple sewn bear instead? It uses less material than a larger bear and scraps can be used. I have lots of miscellaneous scraps of flannel fabric on hand, so here is my cute little flannel pocket bear. Ta da!

He looks larger in the photo because of the closeup photo, but he measures 4 1/2" wide (from the tip of his paw to the tip of the other paw) x 5 1/4" tall (from the foot to the tip of his ear). I think he turned out rather cute for a first try in making him smaller. I do need to perfect the eyes. I used white felt and French knots, which works, but I need to make sure I get the size right and the colors right for future bear eyes. I could sew on buttons, but if a child under 3 years old gets one of these bears, buttons do pose a chocking hazard and I don't want that! I made a second bear, but the eyes turned out a bit odd or even creepy looking and I cannot have that, so need to work on the eyes to find a better solution. I know there are safety eyes sold, but not sure how small they go and how they would look on this bear? Plus, I want to use what's on hand and not buy anything as that is one of the ideas behind making this bear.

I used Warren the Charity Bear pattern to make this in a reduced size. Don't ask me how much I reduced it as I cannot remember 😜. I have made Warren before in full size and 2 reduced sizes, but not reduced this much. He is cute in any size. Polar Fleece is another fabric that can be used too for a soft cuddly bear.

I most likely will make a few more to donate, once I make the eyes how I like them.

Lots of Stuffed Bears

I made a lot of bears last year in 2 sizes. I used red velveteen, plaid flannel and a green print velour. Some have long vertical muzzles and some have oval wide muzzles. All have a little heart on their chests. Hand sewn eyes, so they are safe for children of all ages.

8 Warren Bears in Velour and One in Plaid Flannel

I had some velour that I bought years and years ago and decided to use it. So I made some more Warren Bears. I made 3 velour bears in the original size and one in plaid flannel and then I reduced the size to 75% in order to make 5 more velour bears. I have scraps left in the velour to use for the noses and muzzles, but no more velour. I can make a few more plaid bears though. I used wool for the hearts on the bears.

I love how cute these bears came out in the velour and the plaid. I embroidered their eyes since they might go live with young children under the age of 3 years old and I don't want to worry about a child choking!!! If I knew an older child would receive these, I might add button eyes next time.

Warren the Bear

I saw this bear online from Shiny Happy World and had to make some. They call for using polar fleece, which I made the 2 pink floral ones out of, but the other 2 I used wool. I have a lot of wool from old suits and sweaters, so thought this would be a good project for using up some of the wool.

You can make Warren with a few nose choices and a couple of muzzles choices or a tummy, but you can't include all in one bear. You can also add a heart too. So I made a variety and each give a different personality to Warren. Warren (the Charity Bear) is a free pattern too. Easy to make and so cute and cuddly. These would make great gifts for little ones or to donate to your local police when a child needs comforting, or other charitable organization.

Shiny Happy World has so many cute applique quilts, crochet animals, stuffed toys, embroidery and other sewn things too. It is a happy site to go to. I love the cute animals on her site. Lots of free stuff and other patterns to buy as well.

Made with herringbone wool.

This was from a wool sweater I washed and felted.

All 4 bears. Two with tummies and 2 with different muzzles. A couple of different noses. All have a different personality.

I will be making more of these bears. I may need to sew some patchwork wool first to get large enough body pieces first though. I have plenty of noses, muzzles and tummies I can cut, but the body pieces need large enough pieces and I may need to either sew pieces together first to create large enough body pieces or use some other wool I have around. I could make some out of cotton fabric too, since there are no raw edges showing on the body, just the muzzle, nose and tummy. The nose, muzzle and tummy can be made out of any felt and I have lots of acrylic felt too.
