Hello sweet people, I enrolled in the Sew Powerful Sew-A-Thon to raise funds so schoolgirls in Zambia Africa can have the feminine hygiene supplies they need to attend school all month. I make purses to hold the supplies as a special gift for a girl living in poverty. Together we can help keep girls in school! There is still time to donate through September 30, 2025. Since the sewing part has started for the Sew-a-thon, I have completed 31 purses so far. My goal is 80 purses for the month of September. I just sent in a completed box of 120 purses as well!!! Yay!!!

Sew Powerful Purse #192 (2025)

This flap is made with all kinds of fabric scraps layered on top of a foundation fabric and then tulle placed over it and quilted. I added some couched yarn and buttons too.

This fabric was donated to me and I had just enough to make one purse. The print reminds me of beans, like pinto beans or kidney beans, 😂.

Back pocket. I had to piece the pocket, so I added some lace trim over the seams.

This purse flap is made using raw edge fabric scraps in all shapes and sizes, layered tulle on top and then quilted to hold it all together.

Sew Powerful Purses #145-150 (2025)

Here are 6 more purses using all kinds of scrap fabrics, yarn bits, vinyl scraps, the outer cut out bits from die cuts, felt scraps and more and then covered in a gold metallic embossed tulle and quilted. (I recently shared similar purses with blue metallic embossed tulle). I added buttons to all the flaps.

Anything goes when using tiny bits of fabric scraps.

These flaps all look great once they are done. 

All the fronts look like these, but the lining may vary. The tie dye look fabric for the purse bodies was given to me by a quilter. Thanks Rosalie!

Sew Powerful Purse #144 (2025)

I have made a lot of flaps using tiny bits of fabric scraps and other scraps, covered in tulle and quilted the flaps. I wanted to do the same thing for this flap, only I wanted to try denim scraps only (with a few scraps of organza on top for a bit of shimmer). It worked very nicely quilting the denim this way as there were no thick seams to worry about and adding the lining later it was much nicer too without thick seams to topstitch. I quilted it all and then I couched some yarn on top and added buttons too. The tulle I used had some glitter on it too. I tried to remove as much glitter as possible from the outside so it didn't get all over everything.

This was a fabric that was given to me by a quilter I know. I love the tie dye look!

I made several purses using this tie dye look lightweight canvas material and scrappy flaps. I will be sharing the rest of them soon. 

Donating this and a whole box of other purses I made to Sew Powerful Purse Project. I just packed up a box of 95 purses this morning. Yippee!!! 

Got to go clean and oil my machines next and then start sewing some more kits I just cut up ready to sew. It sure feels good to send a box of purses off to help some girls in Zambia and South Africa too. I used up a lot of fabric, but still no visible dent in my fabrics, except for the selvages that I used making a ton of flaps recently and the denim jeans I used for several purse bodies too. Now I need to make more denim scrappy flaps like this one to shrink the denim scraps bag down.

Sew Powerful Purses 134-143 (2025)

10 more purses with scrappy fabrics quilted with tulle over the scraps, plus added buttons. 

I use all sorts of scraps, even the outer cut out bits of hearts, and circles from die cutting. Embossed blue tulle and lots of quilting hold it all together.

I also add bits of sparkly yarn, vinyl scraps, an organza scraps.

The left purse I couched some yarn and rickrack on top.

I used up this blue home dec print that I have had for years. All the purses look like these.

I finished sewing the last several purse kits I had ready to sew and have taken photos of those that I will share as soon as I upload them off the camera. Meanwhile, I have been busy cutting out more purse kits the past several days, so I will be back to sewing some more purses this week. I need just a few more purses to fill up a box of purses so that I can send them off to California to Sew Powerful.

3 more purses with fabric scrappy flaps covered in tulle and quilted. I find these fun to make and I like throwing in snippets of mesh, yarn, iridescent organza pieces and a few buttons on top.

Sew Powerful Purses #92-94 (2025)

These purse flaps are the ultimate in using small fabric scraps. Made by using all sorts of small bits of fabrics and fusing to a foundation fabric, layering with tulle and quilting to hold all the pieces together. I have done these before without tulle and heavily quilted them, which also works well. I have tulle in various colors, but they don't show up well in the photos. The purse on the right is a gold printed tulle, so you can see the print part, but not the tulle in the photo. These are so satisfying to make and use up scraps that normal people would have thrown away 😁. I especially like using scraps of cotton batik fabrics.
