Tea Tray Quilt

Happy New Year my friends!!!!! I hope you had a great 2013 and that 2014 will be even more fantastic!

My husband bought a heavy duty commercial grade cookie sheet a few years ago. We didn't bake much then and now we aren't baking at all, so I was using these cookie sheets (a set of 2) as trays for my crafts/sewing. My husband wanted a tray for our tea and I thought we could use one of these cookie sheets and I could quilt  little topper to fit inside the tray. So that's what I did.
I used batik scraps to sew this tea tray quilt. I rounded the corner to fit inside the tray. Go to Craftsy for my free tutorial on how to make a quilt-as-you-go table runner, similar to this.
Since I made this in December, I used this beautiful poinsettia fabric for the back, so that it's also reversible too. Hmm...maybe I need to make a few more in other holiday themes like Thanksgiving, Halloween, Valentine's Day, etc.
Here it is in use. The mug on the left my daughter gave to me one year. It's from Starbucks (where she works) and it's the New Mexico mug. My friend Bobbie gave me the pretty pink mug that says Joy on it.

  2. Good idea Daryl. This is one of the projects that I wanted to get done in 2013 and never found the time. I have several trays that I'm not keen on but can't bare to throw away so I thought tray quilts would solve the problem. Thanks for the reminder. I think I'd best write everything down or else I know I'll forget again.

  5. What a great idea. My husband brought me one that someone left in one of the complex apartments. I use it as my beading tray. I covered it in suede using spray on adhesive. When I need the space for a different craft, its easy to move the try without disturbing my work.

I like your idea and the mats you made for it.

    Happy New Year.

  7. You never fail to inspire. Great idea for scraps and repurposing old tools of our past trade. I'm on it for sure.

  8. Happy New Year and I love this idea! I ordered a tray for my quilting room last month on super sale but it's kind of not so pretty in real life so this would be perfect to pretty it up - thanks for the inspiration.

  11. Hello, I love your little tea tray. its very practical because its extremely sturdy. I own lots of tea trays and some are either to fragile to carry much or the surface is uneven. You have the perfect combination, beautiful, versatile and strong. I like that you can interchange your quilted piece with the season.
