Sunflowers Over a Fence Quilt

In August I went to a quilting de-stash sale with a couple of friends. It was fun to find lots of goodies at bargain prices. I had no idea what I would find when I got there. I was looking for anything that caught my eye, but hoping to find some red, purple and neutral fabrics, which I did find some of those too.

One thing that caught my eye was a kit for making this sunflower quilt. I love sunflowers and blue and yellow together, so I snatched this kit up for a great price of $10. I made it in September and hung it on the wall in my bedroom, but haven't had the chance to post it and share it with all of you.

I used all the fabric that came with the kit, except for 2 of the brown sunflower centers I just didn't like at all and used my own brown for those. One brown in the kit was nearly purple in color and the other was brown corn-on-the-cob print, which I didn't want for my sunflower center. The rest of the fabrics were from the kit and I used my own backing fabric.

I usually never buy kits, mainly because I prefer to choose my own fabric colors; but at this price how could I not snatch it up? I love how it turned out. The sunflowers are supposed be peeking over a blue fence.

Oh and my other 2 friends also loaded up on goodies of their own. It was a fun day and it will take me several years just to use up what I purchased at that de-stash sale. This was their 3 or 4th annual sale and only my second time attending. Will they have another sale next year? I don't know. Maybe I will attend if they do, or maybe I will chain myself to my sewing machine to use up the other stuff I acquired at this sale. It's hard to resist a good sale though. My one weakness....

Sunflowers in a Vase Applique Wall Quilt

This is one of the applique designs from a series called Fiesta Vases, an applique designed by Susan R. DuLaney. I bought this pattern well over 10 years ago, so this was what I wanted to work on at my small applique group a few months ago.

I had the applique done for a long time and decided to sew a scrappy border. I sewed a scrappy background for a few quilts I have made before and my friend took my scrappy background idea and sewed a scrappy border like this one in black fabrics, only she add a tiny scrap of color in the center of her border blocks, which really pops on her black fabrics. Well I loved her scrappy border, so I used that idea and made my border in whites with an orange or yellow square in the center. Funny how I inspired her and she inspired me so between the two of us we got some great ideas, lol!!!

I did fusible applique with a blanket stitch on my quilt. I added an inner border of blue to define the sunflower in a vase and separate the white background from the white scrappy border. I love how it came out and so glad I finally go this one made!

The fabrics for the sunflowers and vase are batik or hand dyed fabrics.

Mostly batik fabric with the lighter green a hand dyed fabric and the yellow is hand dyed with a bit of orange paint and the profile orange sunflower is hand dyed fabric too.

The scrappy border is made in the same way as my Patchwork Scrappy Background tutorial, only start with a colored fabric square. My square is 1-inch.

Say it With Flowers Blog Hop: My Day

It's my day to share my Flower Creations. I love flowers, all kinds of flowers. I never met a flower I didn't like. I am partial to cone-flowers/echinacea, but I love all flowers! I had a few works in progress that needed to get finished and this blog hop was just the thing to light my fuse and get me going. Thanks Madame Samm for creating this blog hop and for sweet Carol of Just Let Me Quilt for cheer-leading on this hop. 

Before you all think I never sleep, let me explain that some of these quilts were started over 3 years ago. One needed to be quilt and bound, another just needed the binding, one needed a border and then to be quilt and bound, and another I added some embroidery, border, quilting and binding to in order to finish it.

I drew this sunflower on black fabric using a bleach pen. It's bleach discharged, removing the black dye. I painted green dye over the discharged areas of the leaves and grass and stem. I painted red dye over the center of the sunflower and touched a little dye into the flower petals. I left the flower petals just as it was after the bleach discharge. 

I added a triple fabric border and corners. I used a couple of decorative machine stitches to stitch the wavy border. This is my own original quilt design.

This echinacea cone-flower quilt was needle turned appliqué by hand. I embroidered the spider and spider web by hand. I fused on some fabric butterflies and hand embroidered the antennae. Machine quilted the quilt.

Close-up of spider web and spider. I used one strand of Mylar along with the embroidery floss to give the spider web a sparkle to simulate the sun shining on the morning dew of the web. It really sparkles, even if this photo doesn't show it well.

Made with batik fabrics.

I made this Sewing Needle Roll out of wool felt. All made by hand with added appliqué and embroidery. It rolls up and snaps to keep it closed. This is my own design I made up. The pattern for this is in my Craftsy store.

Here the roll is opened. There is a pocket at the bottom to hold my thimble and little scissors.  The  orange rectangle holds my needles, and the pink flower is stuffed with fiberfill and is the pincushion. I hand dyed all the felt except the white and dark green leaves.

This I made from a packet of batik flowers and hand dyed orange and yellow fabric. I made up the setting. All I needed to do to finish this quilt was to bind it. I used a fabric for the binding that has fuchsia, yellow, and orange in it, which was perfect.

I used a stencil to paint these cone flowers on fabric. I found the stenciled flowers in my UFO pile and decided this blog hop was just the thing I needed to finish it. I found the perfect fabric for a border and binding and the right green for the narrow inner border in my fabric collection. It was meant to be.

I free-motion echo quilted this small quilt.

In Your Words Blog Hop: My Day (Heart Quilt & Sunflower Garden Quilt)

I love words, or quotes on quilts, so when Madame Samm came up with this blog hop I knew I had to participate. The biggest problem for me was that I had way more ideas swimming around in my head than I had time to complete them.

Linda, the cheerleader for this blog hop told us the meaning of her name (which is from the Spanish and means pretty). The meaning of Daryl, which is my name is Old English, means beloved or dear. I don't know if there were many female Daryl's when I was born, but as the story goes, my dad wanted a different name for me if I was a girl. I had an older brother, so I wasn't named Daryl because my dad wanted a son, as he already had a son. I was the second born (I have a younger sister). So my mother decided on the name Daryl as (uh oh this will date me) the famous movie producer at the time was Darryl F. Zanuck, so she named me after him only she spelled my name with one "r' instead of 2. Okay now on to my quilts...

My first idea was to include as many of the 83 words (or phrases) I had written down that I could fit on the first quilt I made below. I could only fit in 65 words below onto the heart of the quilt. As I was making this quilt I thought of the caterpillar from the Disney animated movie Alice in Wonderland, when he asked Alice, "Who...are...YOU"? So I added those words to the quilt. The applique letters are from the Alphabet Quilt Pattern I designed and sell on Craftsy and here on my blog too. I also found an orange fabric in my stash that had printed words on it that were autumn words & phrases such as: cool, love, butterfly, leaves, crisp, fall day, believe, this will be a very good year, a beautiful season, courage, fall day, and I thought that fabric was perfect for the border, especially since I was born in the fall. I used a background fabric that has all sorts of tools for a person to create things, such as paint, pens, buttons, ribbons, scissors, spools of thread, so that was a perfect fabric choice for this little quilt too. I am pleased with the results.

I had also cut out a lot of applique letters in felt, but just didn't have time to use those for this blog hop. So hopefully I will be using those felted applique letters on one or more projects in the future.

I then made the second quilt (Garden Quilt) using a lot of fused applique shapes that I already had on hand (beginnings or leftovers from other projects) including the stamped words. My friend, Susan, had given me the 4 sunflower seed packet prints and the sunflower fabric for my birthday in November and I thought it was perfect for this quilt. After I quilted this quilt, I thought I would try Sharon Schamber's binding method to bind this quilt. I used bits of fusible web to fuse the binding pieces together instead of using spray starch as Sharon does in the video. I have chemical sensitives and that spray starch would have made me sick. I did follow the rest of her method and it worked well. Since this is a wall quilt, I won't be washing it, so the glue won't be washed out, although I may spray the binding area with water and see if I can get the glue to wash out somewhat. Since this was my first attempt at this method, my glue was thicker in some places and made it a bit harder to hand sew through. I guess I have mixed feeling about doing this binding method. I picked up some great tips from her video even if I never use glue on my binding again.

I later sold this quilt to a friend and she requested that I make the text easier to read, so I fixed it. I had used stamps on fabric and it hadn't stamped as nicely as I had liked, so I fixed it by outlining the lettering as you can see in the next 2 photos.

Sunflower Quilt
