Silicone Trivet and Potholder (+ Giveaway)

Recently I tested the Silicone Trivet and Potholder pattern from Around the Bobbin. This is a fun sew and such a useful trivet or potholder. Place it on the counter or table with the silicone side up and your hot pot or dish can sit on top. Flip it over and there is a pocket to use it as a potholder. Or make without the pocket as just a trivet. Add a loop to hang or not. I don't hang mine, so no loop for me. The pattern and silicone come in a small or large version. I made the small one, which finishes 8" square. The large finishes 9 1/2" square. There are two ways to finish these, which is explained in the pattern.

I just happened to have an orphan quilt block handy the right size when I tested this, so I chose to use it. However, I would suggest placing the silicone over your fabric first as you can see on my finished potholder/trivet only the bright colors showed through and the black and purple hardly show. So the next one I will make sure I can see the fabric under the silicone a bit better.

Giveway info at end of post.
I used a pieced orphan block for the front of my potholder.

The finished potholder/trivet. I used traditional binding to finish this one.

I quilted the back and the pocket

Patchwork Potholder with Crochet Edge & Mug Rugs

I made a potholder using Lori Holt's (of Bee in My Bonnet) tutorial. I used up some blue fabric scraps and the crocheted edge was easy to do. But I didn't have any of that silver heat resistant material, so I used Insul Bright batting instead on the potholder. The potholder turned out cute, but I thought I would rather make some more as mug rugs, so I made 3 as mug rugs and just the one as a potholder.

I made two mug rugs the same, so the backing on the left side is the same on both and the patchwork on the right one is the same too. So this way you can see the front and the back at the same time. Aren't I clever? Lol!

This is the potholder I made in blue patchwork with blue crochet edge.

Here is the back of the potholder where you place your hands inside. Like I mentioned earlier, I used Insul Bright batting and lining the potholder in a muslin fabric.

I made another one as a mug rug with blue crochet edge.

This is the back of the mug rug.

These are the 2 mug rugs with natural color crochet edging, as in the first photo, but showing the fronts only here.

Flower City Potholder Set

I recently tested the Flower City Potholder set by Radiant Home Studio. The pattern is a set of 3 potholders, with one being an oven mitt. I made the square potholder and the long casserole potholder. I made a goof in the oven mitt (my fault!) and didn't have any more of the same fabrics left, so I will only show you these two.
These two are the easiest to make and go together fairly quickly too.

I used some fabric I had around for a while that I knew would make a nice apron or potholder, but not needing an apron, I hadn't used this fabric. So it was the perfect fabric to use for this set of potholders.

The vegetable fabric was actually the border on both sides of the orange plaid fabric and the other coordinating fabric I had was the purple plaid. So I cut out the vegetable fabric for the pockets of these potholders.

Okay I am not that good at staging a photo, especially when taking these outdoors.

The empty Fiesta bowls look lonely without something yummy to eat in the bowls. A food magazine photographer I am not, lol!!!
Pop over to Radiant Home Studio while this pdf pattern is on sale, if you want to make some quick gifts for the gourmet chef in your life or the simple cook. You can even sew a patchwork version, which Sara includes the instructions for doing the patchwork version as well in the pattern. These could be a great scrap busting project as well. uses cotton batting and a thermal batting as well.

Quilted Potholders

I made a couple of potholders for an online contest. I didn't win or even come in the top ten. I used batiks for this one.

This is the pocket side of the batik potholder.

This is the pocket side of the second potholder.

I used scraps leftover from my Diagonal Madness quilt (see posting below).
