Raw Edge Art Quilt #2 & Small Art Quilt too

Here is another quilted raw edge art quilt I made that I mounted on an artist board. On this one I added a fabric border, plus embellishments of buttons, appliqué flowers, yarn couching, organza and mesh. I quilted it in a waves in both horizontal and vertical directions, as I also did when I couched the yarn in those directions too. Similar, but slightly different look from the one I posted yesterday.

I also made a small piece (scroll down to see it) that is about postcard size. Both of these will be on display at the Corrales Library too all January. More to share tomorrow as well.

16" x 20".

Closer look.

I love sewing buttons and creating a flower in the button holes.

The shiny organza adds a nice bling punch.

This small piece is about postcard size. I added tulle over the piece. a few crystals were added and some sparkly yarn bits.

"Oh Happy Day": Raw Edge Batik Art Quilt

I named this fiber art piece, Oh Happy Day, as it made me happy to create this piece. It is a happy mix of fibers that I quilted and mounted on an artist board. I added embellishments like buttons, couched yarn, bits of mesh netting, organza bits and crystals.

This and some other fiber arts that I created will be on display at the Corrales Library the month of January, along with others who have submitted their fiber art pieces. There will be quite a variety of fiber art: knitting, hand embroidery, quilts, Hardanger and more. Some pieces will be for sale by the artist and some are not for sale, but just on display. I have a few more items that I have made that I will be sharing here on my blog this week for you to see what I have put in the show. I have my work for sale.

There will also be a one day artist reception and I will be bringing some of my bags to set up on a table to sell there as well, since they couldn't be hung in the show. This is the first time our stitch group will be displaying our work in a show, so I hope it goes well. We might do it again if it is well received.

This piece measures 16" x 20".

Sew Powerful Purses #203-221 (last purses made for 2023)

Happy New Year 2024 everyone!!!

These are the very last purses completed for 2023 that I will donate to Sew Powerful. I completed a total of 220 purses for the year in 2023. I had cut out over 300 purse kits to sew, mostly for the Sew-a-thon (SAT) last year in September, but completed 116 (I think) for the SAT. I wanted to see how many purses I could complete by the end of 2023, which turned out to be 220 total purses. Since I still have lots of kits cut out and in different stages of completion, I will be working on those kits this year to get them finished before cutting out any more kits (fewer kits I think). The idea of having kits made to sew whenever I wanted to was great in one way. Just sew. But then I want to start other purses with new ideas I have, so perhaps it would be best to cut just a few kits at a time and sew them, before cutting more. I will try fewer kits and see if that works better for me. Time will tell.

The center hexagons I cut from a scrap that was given to me. I sewed strips around the hexagon crazy-pieced style.

The purse on the left was a scrap donation that was already quilted to cotton batting, so I cut it into the purse pieces and made this colorful striped purse. I added a double stacked button for fun. The purse on the right was the last piece I had of this print of African women. I got a partial 1/2 yard at a de-stash sale over a year ago. I added strips on the side of the fabric to create a flap wide enough to use. Then I sewed some rainbow ribbon over the seams and added a few flower shaped buttons.

Free form pieced scrappy flap here, with added dancing heart buttons. They look like they are dancing, since I placed each one differently.

2 purse with pieced batik fabric flaps. The left one I decided to pieced some small triangles I had already cut out that I never used for anything before. I added batik strips and a row of sewn pieces of uneven square shapes. The one on the right was a free Friendship Star quilt block that was donated. I made one purse flap using the other star block already. As I was going to make this flap, I realized (oops!) that I had accidently cut it too small in width! It was cut 1/2" too short, so I just added the extra width needed on the right side of the flap, so it would be wide enough. I think that was a good save for this flap. Note to self: Pay attention when cutting!

These are the backs of the 2 batik flap from above. Front jean pockets on the backs. Since these pockets fit on the back, I like to use them as a pocket that actually works. The patch pockets on the jeans I deconstructed are just too tall and cannot be sewn anywhere on these purses. I use smaller patch pockets from smaller women size jeans when I have them.

These 2 denim purses have pockets with flaps and a button closure to the flap. They were from a lightweight denim shirt. The rest of the purse is upcycled denim from men's jeans. For the flaps, I added additional scraps of denim to make the flap the correct size needed. I also added some ribbon and buttons for a bit of bling.

This is the back of the purse on the right from above. A patch denim pocket with added heart appliqué. Just the bottom tip of the pocket had to get sewn into the seam. As you can see this pocket just barely fit on the back.

Two more upcycled denim purses with added ribbons, heart shaped and flower shaped buttons.

The backs of the two purses from above also have the front pockets on the back of these purses.

This cute dog print from Benartex Fabrics is called, Dog On It Let's Face It.
It was a panel of different dog heads on black background. (The rest of the dog purses are below). The dogs are cute, colorful and there is some gold metallic in the print too. I scored a piece of this at a quilter garage sale over a year and a half ago. They made an all over dogs print too.

Decorative stitched front pocket with ribbon and a fabric heart pieced card
On the above purse, I added ribbon and yarn couched yarn on the front pocket. The pieced scrappy heart is my notecard front that I added a hanging ribbon to.

The back of the notecard, I stamped quotes all over it in different colored ink. Also, this is the back of the purse with the full flap (upside down).

How many purses will I make this year in 2024? Who knows? But every single purse I do make will change a girl's life for the better.

Have the BEST NEW YEAR ever!!! Cheers!

Sew Powerful Purses #183-202 (2023)

I finished these 20 purses to donate to Sew Powerful in December 2023. I am still sewing a few more purses, so I hope to complete several more before the new year begins. I had cut out so many purse kits to have ready to sew during the September Sew-a-thon this year, so I really wanted to finish as many purses as I can before I need to cut more purse kits.

Here are the 20 purse I completed~

This purse I made using a raw edge technique I came up with. It is heavily quilted and I used tiny scraps, all raw edge batiks on this flap. I couched yarn, added some buttons, and an iridescent material scrap too. I really love making the flaps like this!

Showing the back of purse with upcycled denim jean pocket
I upcycled denim jeans for the purse body and this is the back of the purse with the front jean pocket. I flipped the flap up so you could see the entire flap, since a bit of it gets hidden on the back when the flap is folded over to the front side.

Closeup of decorative machine stitches sewn to the webbing strap
I also had done some decorative machine stitching down the center of the webbing straps on some purses. I wanted to try doing the stitches to see if it would work and it did! So I stitched up several webbing straps in various colors of webbing and used various variegated thread colors and different stitched designs too as you will se in a few of the purses below.

another upcycled denim purse, including the flap that I made using several scraps of denim in various shades of blue denim and black denim too.

Back of purse also has the front denim pocket for the back.

2 upcycled denim purses here. The one on the left I quilted scraps of denim that was all raw edge to keep it flat as too many denim seams can be a bear to stitch through! Then I added a butterfly that I appliquéd over the quilted denim. It just needed something else and I already had the butterfly appliqué cut out. The purse on the right is patchwork denim scraps sewn with seams and I added some ribbon and even a Levi label!

These 2 purse backs have the patch denim pockets added to the back side and I stitched an appliqué heart onto each pocket.

3 more appliqué flaps of wild animals.

This is a patchwork flap that started with the pentagon shape in the center. Those 3 buttons I stitched on by hand using making a little flower in the buttons with the embroidery floss.

Another patchwork scrappy flap with added heart buttons.

These 4 purses are scrappy patchwork and I sewed the flowers in the buttons on all of these as well.

These 3 are patchwork flaps. I added flower shaped buttons that I sewed on 2 of the purse flaps.

Here are 4 purses with an African women print. I used red fabric for the gussets on all 4 purses, since I didn't have enough fabric to use for all the purses of this print. 3 of the purses I had enough to create the front and backs of the purses, but not for the fourth purse, so that body is all red.
