I saw this
free pattern for making these
little knit owls puffs and I thought it was a great project to use up some of the misc. yarn leftovers I have. They were fun and easy to make. I found myself knitting so many of them that I decided to create a string of owls like you see strings of other fabric birds and things that are sold at import shops. Then I got the idea of having the owls perched on a branch. I found little pieces of branches and drilled a hole in them like a bead. I hot glued on some faux leaves too. I actually made 3 different sets of hanging owls, each with a different number of owls. I even made 3 in eyelash yarn and they look like baby owls.

| They look better outside, but they kept turning while I tried to take their photo. I had to be quick or I would get their backside. |

| I made these 3 with eyelash yarn. After sewing on the eyes of the bottom one and getting the yarn tangled up as I sewed, I opted to glue the eyes on the remaining two owls. They do look like little baby owls in the eyelash yarn. |
I also love the bird logo from Bird Brain Designs. This bird is a
free embroidery from Bird Brain Designs. I enlarged it and did a combination of applique and embroidery.

| This owl was a free applique pattern from Cherry of Cherry Blossoms Quilting Studio. Cherry has been a frequent blog hopper with Mdm. Samm's blog hops too. |

| I decided to do a reverse applique border and then added rickrack and French knots all around the rickrack in 2 colors. |
The state bird here in New Mexico is the roadrunner. I wanted to make something with a roadrunner too, but alas too many ideas and not enough time. So I leave you with a few photos instead.

| The Rail Runner is the commuter train here in New Mexico. As you can see the roadrunner head and tail painted on the train. My grandson calls this the "bird train". He loves trains! Although roadrunners do not make a beeping sound like the roadrunner cartoon character does, when the doors are closing on the Rail Runner, you can hear the beep, beep, beep sound. |

ReplyDeleteYou always have wonderful ideas Daryl ! I have a love for roadrunners, anything that will kill a rattlesnake is a hero in my book ! As a matter of fact some roadrunners live in a tree line right past our cattle guard. We call them Rascal and Rebecca !

ReplyDeleteAs always you are an inspiration. thanks to you i have my own string of owls. i'm telling you those knitted owls are addicting. i have to try try making one using I lash yarn although i don't think i have any. Luckily drilling the hole in the wood is easy and the added touch of the leaf is adorable. Of course you've taken it a step further and did some beautiful applique as well as some bird embroidery. i wish i had your sense of color. i've been hiking quite a bit and there is an owls nest that i've been watching which has two babies in it. The bird theme is very timely. thanks again for helping me to use up my stash and inspire me.

ReplyDelete(We have a roadrunner living in the mesquite brush behind our yard. The first time I heard him, I thought someone had one of those old timey Halloween rachets. Strange noise! We're glad he's there, though, since he eats snakes!)

I don't knit so seeing how many you made and how cute they are has totally impressed me (this isn't the first time you've blown me away AND impressed me.) I love those little furry looking ones--too cute. I get to see roadrunners every once in a while around here and up in Utah when we're there. They are so entertaining to watch.

ReplyDeleteGiggling about your trying to get a picture of the owls as they spun slowly showing their backsides. Maybe those same wind currents that blow wall hangings around too? How cute is your Bird Brain embroidery/applique! And the owl too. Very well done in all your projects. I hope you do the road runner project as I bet your grandson will be a big kick out of that if he loves the bird train.

ReplyDeleteLast time I was visiting my daughter in ABQ, we went to one of the quilt shops. She saw a preprinted panel with owls. She said it would be cute, if she had a girl. She has two boys. So, I recently bought a cross stitch pattern with an adorable owl. It has PINK, too. So, I am going to use other colors for it. I thought the owl puffs would be an adorable accompainment to the stitching. All the owls are adorable. I have already downloaded the pattern. I have lots of yarn; not speciality yarns, but yarn. I have a couple of yarns in mind for a owls. I love Bird Brain designs and love the way you combined applique and embroidery. I've already downloaded that pattern, too. And, of course, Cherry's owl is adorable. Thanks for including the info on the patterns. I don't know how much time I spend trying to find patterns for things I like. I'll have to see if my daughter knows about the train. Thanks for participating and all the inspiration. Can hardly wait to see you in more hops.

Daryl, your owls are too cute. I love them all. When I was a child we traveled from Illinois to California almost every year. I remember asking what kind of lizard that was running across the road in front of us. I couldn't believe it was a bird. I kept watching for one that stopped. Fascinating animals. Thank you for sharing the road runner too.

ReplyDeleteI wanted to let you know that I'll be visiting my daughter and her family later this month in ABQ. After I saw the Rail Runner pic, I wrote to her. Her older son, age 7, has been wanting to go. So, we plan to take both boys - the other one turned 2 in March to Santa Fe, eat, walk around, and come back. Thanks for the tip.
