Flap of Friendship #2 (Purse #52 for 2024)

I completed the purse after receiving the 2nd Flap of Friendship that I signed up to do. This one was made by Susan from Florida. She made it scrappy!!! I posted just the flap in the Facebook Group and Susan commented that was her first scrappy flap she ever made! Gosh, I couldn't believe it. It was pieced so perfectly and colorful scraps too, which is just my style! I completed the purse a couple days after I received, but the weather has been windy or rainy or both, so taking a good photo wasn't going to happen for a while. Yesterday the sun came out for a little while, so I was able to snap some photos and here they are.

Ta-da! I love those sparkly purple buttons too!

Back side of purse with back pocket
This fabric for the body was donated to a group I belong to. There was just about 1/4 yard
of it and I knew it would make a nice purse, but paired with the flap Susan made, it really made it come together!!! This is the back of the purse that I added a back pocket to.

Flap flipped up to show the front pocket and flap lining
The flap lining that Susan used, so I knew purple was a great choice for the purse exterior and this beautiful fabric had both purple and pink in it!

Side of purse showing gusset and rivet
Here is the side showing the gusset and rivet. I made the Intermediate purse and the flap is the beginner style flap, which I always make anyhow myself.

Fabric pieced strap with serpentine center stitching
I didn't have enough of the fabric to create the full strap, but I love piecing 2 or more fabrics to create a strap if I am not using webbing. I found another purple fabric to go with the scrap I had and completed the strap and stitched a serpentine stitch down the center of the strap in a variegated thread.

Main lining inside purse
The main lining fabric was something I just won at my quilt group. We have a nametag drawing at each meeting and rarely, if ever win, but they called my name and I won 2 different fat quarters and a small box of pins. This fabric made the perfect lining to go with the rest of the purse, yay!

Just the flap that Susan made
Here is just the flap that I received from Susan. Thanks Susan! We made a great purse making team.

Flap of Friendship I Received & Made into a Purse for Sew Powerful (#31 for 2024)

This is the purse flap I finally received in the mail. The maker of this flap had pneumonia, so she couldn't make it right away. She sewed on a lace butterfly and stitched a decorative topstitching around the flap. (Shhh.... don't tell her that she got the fabric upside down. It is a pretty print and maybe no one else will notice?) I am too observant about such things. That is why I make a good pattern tester as I catch a lot of the goofs in the patterns I test, lol!

Purse flap I received in mail from Marsha M.
Here is the Flap of Friendship that I received. Such a pretty print in pretty colors.

Completed purse I made using flap I received
And here is the completed purse that I made the rest of. Notice I couldn't help myself adding a tiny bit extra to the flap. See a closer look down below.

Flap up to reveal purse body and flap lining fabric
I chose this pretty pink print for the main body and a bright yellow webbing strap.

I added 3 buttons and colored the middle of the lace butterfly that was sewn to flap
Closer look here of what I did to enhance the butterfly just a bit. I colored pink on the center body of the butterfly and added 3 buttons. Drew some antennae and added French knots at the ends. I think it brings your attention a bit more to the butterfly in a subtle way. I hope she doesn't get offended I added this?

A view into the purse to see the main lining fabric I used
For the lining I chose a green and yellow print that went well with the rest of the fabrics.

Unfortunately, I did not learn anything at all about the person who made this flap, other than the city and state she lives in. The flap maker could fill out an optional form that asked a few questions such as what are your hobbies, how did you first hear about Sew Powerful, etc. But I didn't get any information at all about my new friend. The 2 people I made and sent flaps to, I told them about myself and blabbered on about me, lol! They didn't respond via email or snail mail back to me about themselves, either. And while that was not a requirement or even mentioned as an option, I would have thought something they read about me might make them want to at least make a comment back to me and tell me a bit about them? Well, it kind of feels like I walked into the middle of a movie that was playing and don't know who the characters are. I feel like I was left hanging. I might mention this is the person who organized this event that it was a bit of a let down to not get to know a single thing about the other person, other than where they live. This was after all an event to Make a New Friend.  Well at least 2 people learned a bit about me.

Flap of Friendship Purse #2 Completed (for Sew Powerful)

Lynne J. was the purse I sent this flap to and she completed the purse the day it arrived to her! This was part of the Flaps of Friendship exchange during International Friendship Month in February. It was the first time we did this and I will bet next year we might try this again. 100 people participated and a few of us made more than one flap. A few other countries had participated as well, but mostly from the USA.

This was the flap that I made and mailed to Lynne.

This is the completed purse that Lynne made using my flap. It is an African fabric print.

Inside Lynne used a print she said had peace signs and flowers, although I can barely see the peace sign. I would have used that as a lining too! :0)

Together Lynne & I created this purse for a sweet young lady in Zambia. Thanks Lynne!
