Bear Paw Quilt & Wonky Stars Quilt

I just donated these two quilts to Wrap the World With Quilts. I first made these quilts in 1998 and 1999. The Bear Paw quilt I made for my daughter when she was a teenager in high school and the Wonky Stars quilt I made the year before in 1998. They weren't used much at all. Sat on their beds for a few years and then when they got older and moved out on their own, they didn't take the quilts with them. I saved them for years, thinking they might want them one day, but no. So rather than keep them tucked away in the cedar chest, I decided to donate these quilts to some people in Ukraine so they can use and enjoy them and bring them hope and happiness. I left the labels on each quilt with the date made and to my daughter or son. I registered the quilts online with Wrap the World With Quilts, and said where I wanted them to go and wrote a note to the person who will receive the quilt(s) that I made these for my daughter (or son) and wanted to pass them along to them now. They were made with lots of love and I hope the recipient can feel the love that went into these quilts. I hand quilted them too as I had no idea then how to machine quilt them and I never even knew there were any longarm quilter back then.

These were also made many years before I started blogging, so I wanted a record of having made them here on my blog.

Bear Paw made out of mostly purple and green batik fabrics, my daughters favorite colors at the time. She has since changed her favorite color(s) many times over the years and I have no idea what her favorite color is now. I over made a lot of the bear paw blocks at the time, not knowing how many I would need. I turned one into a pincushion, so I will always have a small reminder of this quilt.

I remember hunting for purple and green batiks for a year or so before making this quilt. Buying a fat quarter or more every place I found some I liked. 

I made this Wonky Stars quilt for my son. He loved looking through his telescope at night at the moon and stars. I wondered if he might study astronomy or get into that field one day, but no he didn't. I think he still does like astronomy though.

Bear Paw Quilt

I made this twin size Bear Paw quilt when my daughter was a teenager in high school.  I saw it in her bedroom the other day while I was babysitting my grandson. She had it folded up in fourths on the floor for my grandson to lie down on!! I told her no, no, no quilts are NOT meant to be sat upon. Quilts are meant to cover your body for warmth. My son had done something similar and the quilting came out of his quilt. So after a lecture from me about the care of quilts I told him and now my daughter, I will not make anymore quilts for them if they are not cared for properly. Geesh, you would think they would know better.

I didn't have a digital camera then, so I am taking a photo of it now, even though it was made about 13-14 years ago. I spent about a year collecting various purple and green fabrics to make this quilt. I even found about 8 of these blocks I had leftover that I didn't use. I think I had figured the wrong amount to make because I forgot about the border. I might just make a mini version of this quilt using those blocks I found.

My daughter's favorite colors back then were green and purple. She now likes brown and blue or green.

I hand quilted flowers in the batik green squares.
